Push, Pull, Bind, Tether

In whatever twisted world my decision-making mechanism is currently inhabiting, I’ve decided it’s a good idea to take my first freelance assignment in a while.  Things were in such massive transition between moving, figuring out my full-time situation, and going so hard with the manuscript that I hadn’t been paying much mind to the freelance world.

I’ll be jumping back in with a 1,200 word feature on Providence’s Dear Hunter, whose epic rock-opera records should make for an interesting story.  (Sometimes, the oddest, most unfamiliar subject matter turn out to be the best - Amanda Palmer, I’m looking at you.)  Skyscraper is kicking back into gear, so that’ll be next on the agenda, too, and hopefully I can pick up a few more odds and ends with Gothamist.

With my full-time job having strayed fairly far away from editorial, I realize how important it is to keep my roots in writing - to keep flexing my brain and tethering myself to deadlines.  While I’m obviously hoping to get into the 92Y workshop and be able to continue making my novel the focus of my life, it’s nice just to know the opportunities to be in print are still coming through the pipeline.  And nothing’s a better reminder of why you’ve convinced yourself that your heart and soul are fashioned from the written word than seeing your byline at the top of a page.
